Preus worked with Gates in various capacities since 2006.  Gates was one of many artists who collaborated with Material Exchange on Biographical Extensions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, in 2006.

Their work developed through a shared interest in salvaged materials, and Preus began modifying and restoring the Dorchester Project houses, beginning with a number of build-outs in 6918, now completely remodeled as the Listening House.

then led the renovation and redesign of 6916, or the Archive House

followed by 6901, the Black Cinema House.  Preus worked with architect Mejay Gula on designing built-ins and furniture.

Preus was the lead fabricator for Gates from 2011 until 2013, leading projects such as An Epitaph for Civil Rights at Kavi Gupta; 12 Ballads for Huguenot House in Kassel Germany for documenta 13, and ongoing production of studio and building work.
